Important factors to consider:

Field selection

  • Choose dryer fields to allow early grazing in spring.
  • Choose fields close to the parlour and housing facilities.
  • Choose areas visited regularly for effective pasture monitoring and management.
  • Only to a maximum of 20% of your land should be sown with cool season active grasses.

Grazing management

  • Poaching, flooding and over grazing can reduce the life of any sward.
  • Shorter rounds in the early season.
  • Low residuals (5cm) will aid in maintaining pasture quality.
  • Cutting for silage to control quality is also possible.
  • Extra grazing later in the autumn would be beneficial.

Benefits of "Cool Season Active Grasses"

    • Reduces feed and labour costs.
    • Grass Growth later into autumn extends the grazing period.
    • Reduced time period to carry grass over the winter minimising dead material in the sward base.
    • Late- winter growth allows cows out earlier to graze.
    • Better opportunity to control pasture quality across the whole farm in spring.
