Clover And Forage Crops
All organic seed is compliant with EU organic regulations and is fully certified by the EU approved organic certification body LACON.
Many of the basic principals remain the same for organic farming as with conventional farming. There are some important differences, most noticeably fertilizers and herbicides for weed control are not allowed.
The organic farmer must focus on the following key factors:
- Establish a system of grassland management.
- Understanding the importance of pasture renewal, reseeding and over seeding.
- With herbicides disallowed, ensure the seed can establish quickly before the weeds or existing sward can compete.
- Clover rich swards ensure nitrogen fixing from the soil.
Organic Coated - Organic Clover
Organic coated clover has the same organic coating as on ordinary coated clover except there is no die used in the process. This ensures the coating is compliant for organic use and has been appro- ved for use by the organic certification body LACON.
Organic White Clover
White clover is a vital ingredient in all permanent grassland mixture. It is not only a Nitrogen contributor but produces high protein forage. It is either under sown in a mixture in cereal crops or sown direct. It is incorporated in a mixture at a rate of 2/4 kg per ha. Each % of white clover in the pa- sture produces 2kg N/ha/y, so up to 30% of white clover produces 2kg N/Ha/y.Sowing Rate: 2/4kg per acre
Organic Red Clover
Similarly Red Clover contributes Nitrogen to the soil for the benefit of main crops and catch crops. Red Clover performs for 2-3 years and should be rotated on the farm.Organic Kale
Extremely productive fodder species which during the winter yields a large tonnage of fresh Green fodder which can be fed indoors or if the weather is suitable, strip grazed in the field.Sowing Rate: 2-3kg per ha
Sowing time: March - July
Organic Winter Forage MG 200
Excellent ground cover for improved weed control as well as a good forage supply with a high protein content due to the crimson clover. The crimson clover will also supply a high rate of nitrogen fixing in the soil improving both soil fertility and conditioning benefiting future crops.
40% Crimson Clover
60% Westerwold Sowing
Organic Mustard (green manure)
Sown as a catch crop after wheat and barley, the mustard plant collects the nitrates and nutrients from in the soil at the end of the season which would otherwise be washed away. The plant will re supply the soil with the nitrates and nutrients when it becomes decomposed and mulched the following spring. Mustard has a high green productivity and therefore will supply a lot of humus and organic substances to the soil.
Sowing Rate: 20-25kg per ha
